A conversation with Matt Shardlow, CEO of Buglife the invertebrate conservation trust and – as ‘The Independent’ put it – “the environmentalist with the most conspicuous rising reputation in Britain”. In this podcast we are discussing neonicotinoids, an incredibly toxic group of chemicals that appear to be having a massive impact on invertebrates. Matt explains what neonicotinoids are, the serious impacts they’re having, and why Buglife is threatening legal action against the government saying that their use should be halted under the EU law of ‘Precautionary Principle’.

“Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates, and we are passionately committed to saving Britain’s rarest little animals, everything from bees to beetles, and spiders to snails. Today bugs are under threat as never before, so help us to secure a diverse and wildlife-rich planet for future generations.”

Hi Charlie,
I’m a big fan of Buglife for a small organisation they punch well above their weight.
However I wonder what consideration Buglife have given to the alternatives if neonicotinoids are banned? this could lead to more toxic chemicals being used more widely and therefore bring accelarated and further disaster to insects and all wildlife on farms.
