How We Are Killing the Environment With Our Daily Habits

Habits are reoccurring activities that we practice so often they begin to occur subconsciously. However, these subconscious activities are consciously killing the environment that has been sustaining us. We understand that many of us don’t know, but that’s why we are here. We will bring to your notice the things you are doing that are destroying the environment.

Now, we are not saying any of these to make you feel bad or hate yourself for killing the earth. We merely want to bring it to your attention because you are 100% not the only one. Many of us don’t even know. These practices are things billions of people do every day and are seen as normal and needed. Also, we are not asking you to stop these habits – some of them are necessary. After pointing each out, we will make sure to mention how you can do those things better in a way that’s more environment-friendly. So without any other delay, here are some daily habits of ours that are slowly destroying the environment.

  1. Driving

  2. We are not saying you should go sell your car and begin to trek just to save the planet. Driving is great – however, the exhaust fumes from cars increase the carbon concentration in the atmosphere and thereby promote global warming. So go for more eco-friendly options like trains, buses, bikes, or cars that use fuel. Or better still, reduce how much you drive. Use better options when you travel and stroll for shorter distances.

  3. Throwing away batteries improperly

  4. Can you say you are innocent of this claim? Batteries are toxic to the soil because of the mercury they contain. Throwing them randomly while on the move or your lawn is killing the environment. Treat it as the enemy of the earth and dispose of it properly.

  5. Using plastics

  6. Shops, factories, restaurants, everyone uses plastics every day. It is either in the form of bottles, wrappers, bags, plates, spoons and so on. Plastics are not degradable materials, so they eventually become pollutants. If you can switch to other biodegradable materials.

  7. Using paper

  8. Unlike plastics, where it is the disposal that hurts the environment, here, the production is already causing the environment to cry. Countless trees are cut down to make books, toilet papers, tissues, and so on. So the more paper you use, the more trees are cut down. Switch to cloth and digital copies instead.

  9. Wasting food

  10. Not only is this an act of ingratitude for all the sacrifices the environment made to produce the food, but it is also not good for the earth. Throwing food increases the growth of organic matter in wrong places like inside pipes, waterways, and so on. So please finish your food next time.

  11. Using electricity for the slightest things

  12. We understand that people need electricity – almost like we can’t do without it. But when boiling water, or heating your coffee, using electricity costs more for the environment than you think. The more electricity you use, the more coal and diesel are being used. So next time you want to heat your cup of coffee, use the gas cooker.

  13. Using electricity for too long

  14. Apart from the load you place on coal and diesel when you heat your coffee, you will place more load when you use electricity for much longer by staring at the TV, or your computer for hours. This is like scrapping all the coal from the earth with nothing to substitute it with.

  15. Washing your face

  16. Hold your horses! We are not saying you shouldn’t wash your face. But use more eco-friendly materials to wash than plastic exfoliating face washes. These substances contain dangerous tiny materials that can make their way into the water bodies and poison marine animals.

  17. Flushing the toilet

  18. You should know that it’s a little deeper than just flushing the toilet. Every time you flush, you are using a bucket of water that cannot be used for any other thing except it is processed at the sewage point. So with this in mind, you can reduce the amount of time your flush or use low-flush toilets instead.

  19. Brushing your teeth

  20. If you can’t brush your teeth without leaving the water to keep running, then you are guilty of killing the environment slowly. Leaving the water to run while your brush your teeth works against the conservation of water.

  21. Online shopping

  22. Buying things online come with the need to wrap, package, and transport them to the required destination. In case it still hasn’t clicked, plastic bags will be involved as well as an increase in exhaust fume. As we have earlier discussed, these practices actively hurt the environment.

  23. Not recycling

  24. It’s simple, have a recycle bin and a waste bin in your home to help note the difference between the two. Repurposing used materials like plastics can help reduce how much waste is generated from them.

Conclusion

See? Some weren’t so bad. The environment has taken care of us all these while helping us survive. It’s time to give back. Which of these habits can we give up, and which of them can be adjusted? Making these little sacrifices will help for a greener and happier environment.
